We were basically won as a prize from the Spanish-American War for the United States after Spain colonized us a long time ago.
And our status never really changed.
The United States wanted to keep their presence in the island, but they didn’t want to give us all the rights that US citizens have.
This is appealing, I think, to the people in control who are pulling these initiatives and having these astroturf organizations happening where they’re creating this fake outrage and creating these parents or these people that are supposed to be behind them, when in reality, it’s just a caravan of buddies that have been hand selected because of their vehemence and their level of aggression and put forth as the faces of their movement.
So Tompkins Square Park sometimes takes on the character of an encampment, sometimes takes on the character of like a mass protest that also becomes an encampment in different ways.
So also it’s really difficult and important when reading the history to figure out the way that people are even being referred to and the sites themselves, because it’s often, like I talk about Echo Park Lake, like you’re saying about Seneca Village.
When people talk about the places, they’re not saying be homeless encampment at whatever.
They’re often just referring to the site as a shorthand.
Unaccompanied youth, that’s huge in what we do.
Youth that are on their own.
The numbers keep increasing.
I would imagine especially like the queer youth.
So there’s not a lot of support in this area for our queer community, and youth especially.
So we’re trying to build that back up.
I’m part of the community, and I’m trying to help.
I think we need it to be separated.
You say, no, we need LGBTQ support.
In my transitioning, I’ve had to like, talk with my therapist, talk with my doctor, have like diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
The need to pathologize people’s existence to justify basic support is just, it’s ridiculous.
It’s fucking wild to have a fucking crazy person making legislation about you out of whole cloth, and evicting you from your housing, and denying you employment, and denying you food, et cetera.
Like, these are crazy people.
There is a basic level of intelligence necessary to know what you don’t know.
There is also a literal minimum IQ threshold for being able to reason in the abstract, and it’s not low.
This is a bad combination, and it’s real.
And the problem is that we’re talking about a huge percentage of the population, who are incapable of abstract reasoning, and who don’t know what they don’t know.
